Being an effective virtual mentor or virtual coach has much the same roles and responsibilities as in a face to face relationship, but requires additionally a reasonable level of comfort with and competence in communicating using electronic media.

Being able to send an email or compose a text message is not enough: you have to be able to do so in a way that builds rapport, promotes open and honest exchange, and maintains a high quality learning conversation.
