  • Have practised and discussed how to handle the one to one meeting with members of the team
  • Have a plan to find out what motivates the members of their team and be able to put new ideas into practice
  • Be more aware of their own behaviour and how it impacts on others
  • Have a simple delegation structure to follow
  • Understand how people learn and be able to apply this knowledge to coaching sessions
  • Be able to deal more effectively with conflict at work

Leadership Exercise: The Tower Game – an exercise which tests communication, leadership, teamwork, innovation and business understanding.

Session 4

One to One

  • What purpose would you have a one to one?
  • Where? How often? How long?
  • Managing performance
  • Agreeing goals and setting SMART objectives
  • Managing attitude and behaviour
  • Managing your friends

Case Study: Participants will role play a series of real life situations and analyse their performance and impact on their colleagues.

Session 5

Introduction to Motivation

  • The three wise men: MacGregor, Maslow and Hertzberg
  • What motivates our people?
  • What are the key motivators which we can use on a daily basis to help improve the performance of the team?
  • Use of the “One Minute Manager” to give feedback

Exercise: Develop a bank of new motivators to try out on return to work.

Session 6

How Do We Come Across

  • First impressions – how do others perceive us?
  • The language we use; the way we say it; our non-verbal language
  • Putting our message across, clearly and simply
  • The ability to listen effectively

Exercise: To practice questioning and listening skills.

Session 7


  • Why is it so hard to delegate?
  • Delegation Questionnaire
  • Benefits of delegation
  • Simple delegation – a structure to help participants delegate effectively
  • Degrees of Delegation – matching the situational management approach

Session 8

How Do People Learn?

  • Learning Theories
  • Learning styles Questionnaire
  • Matching our learning style to that of the person we are training or coaching
  • Do’s and don’ts for the Activist, Reflector, Theorist, Pragmatist
  • How to be an effective coach

Case Study: Participants coach each other on a practical exercise and learn from their successes and failures!

Self assessment: How sure are you that you understand your business to manage it and manage in it?

Session 9

Handling Conflict

  • What causes conflict at work?
  • The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument
  • Participants plot their conflict handling styles
  • Participants plan how to handle certain situations more effectively
