Climate Change & Sustainability Training

Climate Change & Sustainability

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Verifier Training (ISO 14064)

Duration
5 day

Climate change affects all parts of the economy; more and more organisations are having to think about how they need to respond in order to move sustainably into a low carbon economy.

Responses may include strategic accounting for carbon intensity of an organisation, energy efficiency programmes, emissions trading schemes, carbon offsetting, management of carbon embodied in products and/or supply chain etc; along with public reporting for regulatory and/or reputational reasons.

To support these responses the International Standards Organisation (ISO) introduced ISO 14064 to cover the accounting of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from organisational reporting through to offsetting projects, as well as protocols for the verification of inventories and published information.

Dependent upon the focus of the course, the programme is completed and evaluated by either a written examination, often, related to a specific scheme or a more general assessed project. Upon passing the assessed element a Certificate of Successful Completion is awarded. If the assessed element is not completed a Certificate of Attendance is issued.

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to ensure that all Verifiers undertaking work to verify Emissions Reports and assess emissions inventories have the required knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to conduct robust, high level assurance and verification exercises that manage all relevant risks and liabilities. The key learning objectives include:

Awareness

  • Describe the requirements and compliance mechanisms including the role of the various Parties including validators, verifiers and regulators and to demonstrate an understanding of the importance verifiers in protecting the environmental and financial integrity of the many schemes to which ISO14064 may be applied
  • Describe the ISO14064 requirements and relevant guidance and supporting criteria

Knowledge

  • Describe relevant quality assurance and quality control requirements and what to expect when verifying compliance with ISO14064 requirements and principles
  • Consider the practical approaches required when assessing ISO14064 as embedded in regulatory and voluntary schemes worldwide
  • Provide an overview of toolsets to manage the reporting, verification and validation task
  • Participate in practical exercises on the application of relevant toolsets and the use of case studies and examples to show best and less than best practice
  • Verify reported data and information on the basis of checking and testing of source data generation, data accounting, data assurance and information management systems/process
  • Develop and apply risk based techniques for reported data and information in order to ensure the organisational boundary setting, scope and information structures are appropriate and meet requirements

Training is conducted by experienced verifiers who have direct and current field knowledge of application and development of the techniques in the field and to many schemes worldwide. The techniques and tools have all been used in actual verification and reporting tasks over the last 15 years.

Business Needs

Verification, Verifier Training, Certification, Accreditation, Compliance, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, GHG, Non Financial Data Accounting, Emissions Auditing, Carbon Accounting, Environmental Reporting, Regulatory.

Knowledge Level

Delegates do not require any prior knowledge of non-financial data accounting and management to attend this workshop. However, they may have knowledge and experience associated with climate change in general and broader auditing skills, such as for Quality or Environmental Management Systems auditing (not having these is not considered as a barrier to learning nor will it prevent a successful completion of the training). Basic auditing skills do not form a core part of this course, though this has not been a barrier to previous attendees who have gone on as practitioners. The course is designed for all comers.
